| Welcome to the Municipal Solid Waste Management
hompage.
In an effort to synthesize the results of the Integrated Project
Waste (1996-1999) of the Priority Program Environment of the Swiss National
Science Foundation, the editors (Chr. Ludwig, S. Hellweg, and S. Stucki),
together with a large number of national and international experts, were
involved in compiling the state-of-the-art knowledge on waste management and
technology. The synthesis book which has been published by the Springer Publishing
House (2003) is entitled
"Municipal Solid Waste Management - Strategies and Technologies
for Sustainable Solutions".
This homepage has been installed to support the reader with additional
information, which could not be published in the book because of limited
space. In the "erratum / renewals" section you find updated information.
In the "appendix" section additional interesting information and data are
presented. However, the data you find on these web-pages have not been critically
reviewed.
From the book cover: The way municipal solid waste is handled
greatly determines its impact on the local as well as the global environment.
New technologies have emerged for the treatment of waste, for the recovery
of raw materials and energy, and for safe final disposal. The environmental
performance of technologies, their social acceptance and their economic
viability are key issues to be considered in sustainable waste management.
This book provides an overview of current practices in waste management and
a synthesis of new developments achieved through interdisciplinary discussions
of recent research results.
